Living Car-free with a Big Dog: The Pet Taxi

poodle1.jpgWe have a standard poodle, and black poodles need to get their hair cut every 6 weeks or so during Ottawa summers (poodle is pictured above pre-haircut). Since we are now car-free (more about that in a week when we celebrate our 6 month anniversary), we had to figure out how we could get the poodle places he needed to go, such as the vet and the groomer’s.

Enter the pet taxi, a service specifically aimed at getting pets and their owners from one place to another. The one pet taxi I know of in Ottawa is Pets Go Taxi (no website), which as far as I can tell is a one man, one van operation. Unlike people taxis, the pet taxi usually needs to be reserved a few days in advance as it books up fast. In my experience Pets Go Taxi has shown up promptly at the time booked and got me and my poodle where we needed to go efficiently and economically (it costs about the same as a people taxi). Plus the driver loves animals, what more could you ask for?

  • Pets Go Taxi is such a great service. Before I even knew they existed, I had to phone Blue Line, tell them I had a cat.. and since not all drivers want cats in their car, I had to wait more than an hour to get a cab. Never again.

They actually do have a website. 🙂

  • If we consider the pet’s themselves, they probably would rather not take the bus either. It is stressful enough to go to the vet, etc. without having to take OC Transpo with many, many strange people and
strange smells. It is bad enough for me…. and their sense of smell and hearing is much greater.
I have found another alternative service in Ottawa that addresses this problem.
    Check out Ottawa Pet Cab.
    They can be reached at
    http://www.pet-cab.com 613-858-TAXI
They provide a safe, stress-free way to get your pet where it needs to go and the price is comparable to a regular cab (who don’t like to take pet’s as well).

    • I took Ottawa pet cab once, because pets go was on vacation. The rates are way too high and the service is okay. Pets go is my first choice 613 235 7387 the man who runs it is very friendly and you can tell he really does love animals and does pets go because of his love for animals!

  • I’m waiting for Pets Go Taxi to come in about 2 hours to get me and my two dogs to the vet. I had to cancel my original appointment at 8AM in the pretoria pet hospital (just 2 Kms away from my home) because I was waiting for more than 40 minutes from a Blue Line taxi and when I called to ask for it the operator yield at me saying I just had to wait because they can’t know when a taxi will be available and since I’m traveling with dogs I just have to wait. I asked to be transferred to a manager and the guy was irritated because I was complaining for the bad service. If the first time when I called they had said the taxi will take more than one hour like they said in my last called I wouldn’t have been waiting.

I was lucky enough to find this site and pets to go, hopefully I won’t need to call blue line, ever.

  • YUP PETS GO TAXI IS STILL AROUND, 613 235-PETS. STILL ONE MAN WHO DOES IT, MICHAEL IS HIS NAME. HE LOVES PETS…… HE ALLOWS MY DOG TO SIT ON FRONT SIT OF TAXI AND IS SUPER FRIENDLY. I TAKE THE CAB AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR!!!! LAST TIME I TOOK IT, IT WAS JUNE 2013! AND TO TOP IS ALL OFF HIS RATES ARE FANTASTIC!

  • Would I be able to get assistance to help carry my cats from my home to the taxi?.as I would have (two cat carriers) and they are heavy or would I need to arrange before hand to have someone give me a hand with that.?
