Thanks to Lisa Pepper of 350 Ottawa for the event suggestion.
Local group 350.org Ottawa is hosting a screening of Do the Math on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. It’s a documentary about the unsustainability of our current and projected use of fossil fuels. Here are a few figures from http://math.350.org/:
- Fossil fuel corporations have five times more oil, coal and gas in known reserves than climate scientists think is safe to burn;
- We’ve raised global temperatures .8°C (a 2°C warming is considered unsafe);
- That .8°C has caused more damage than expected—for example, the disappearance of a third of summer sea ice in the Arctic.
The screening includes a talk by David Rhynas of Climate Reality Canada about alternatives for addressing climate change, and a discussion about the film and the campaigns that 350.org Ottawa is working on (there’s coffee, too). The event is free and happens on Tuesday, July 23 at 7 p.m. at the Hintonburg Community Centre, 1064 Wellington.
